This page represents some family histories submitted by parents, Aunties and cousins. The spirit of adventure is certainly embodied in these stories of our Grandparents, parents and extended families.

Ésta es la historia de la familia Rybinski,
relatada por la tía Jenny de la Columbia Británica, en Canadá.

La abuela Veronicka y el abuelo Andrew Rybinski, originarios de Polonia, cruzaron el Atlántico, por separado, hacia Canadá allá por los años 20.

Veronicka y Andrew se conocieron y contrajeron matrimonio en Edmonton, adquiriendo una granja de 160 acres, cincuenta millas al oeste de tal ciudad, capital de la provincia de Alberta. Yo, Jenny, nací allí, aquel lugar solitario colmado de árboles, en agosto de 1933. Tanta vegetación había que mi madre incluso me perdió un día cuando cogíamos bayas, y no me hubiera encontrado de no haber sido porque me puse a llorar y gimotear muy ruidosamente – ¡probablemente mientras me picaba un mosquito!

Dos años más tarde llegaron los mellizos, Edward Stanley (tu padre) y Gene Walter; dos pequeñuelos con quienes podía jugar y a los que podía dar órdenes. Gene era encantador, con sus hoyuelos en las mejillas … todas las chicas le perseguían ¡mientras que Edward y yo nos moríamos de envidia!!

Ed y Gene crearon su propio grupo musical, "Moonlight Orchestra" que no era precisamente el tipo de “banda de rock” de hoy día. Los dos tocaban el acordeón y, más tarde, tu padre tocó también el clarinete.



Yo fui la alumna – petrificada, por cierto - que dió el discurso de despedida de la primera clase de duodecimo año escolar que se graduó de la Escuela Secundaria Seba - una clase con exactamente doce estudiantes. Me enlisté en la RCAF (Fuerzas Aéreas Reales de Canadá) en contra de las exhautivas protestas de mi madre, que quería que me hiciera enfermera. A mi ni se me había pasado por la imaginación … y yo gané. Mientras estaba destinada en Edmonton, conocí a Mike y nos casamos en 1955. Al año siguiente tuvimos mellizos, Lana y Les … y después llegaron otros dos varones, Chris y John.

Tu tío Gene tenía un alma bondadosa y era una persona extremadamente generosa. Lamentablemente, su paso por la vida no fue muy agradable y falleció a la edad de 52 años.

Tu padre estudió ingeniería en la Universidad de Edmonton. Después de su graduación se trasladó a Vancuver, Colombia Británica, y fue allí, hacia 1966, donde conoció a Stephanie, tu madre, una enfermera inglesa, en unas clases de baile de sociedad … y la conquistó. La abuela Veronicka y el abuelo Andrew asistieron a su boda.

Nuestro hijo, Les, vive ahora en Chilliwack, B.C., con su esposa Nancy y sus dos hijos, Laura y Andy. Les es un carpintero de gran talento que practicamente ha reconstruido toda su casa y acaba de terminar lo que puede considerarse como el último grito en lo que a garajes se refiere (más bien como una linda casita). También está muy interesado en vehículos antiguos y es propietario de cuatro. Actualmente es el gerente regional del Departamento de Carreteras de Chilliwack.

Tristemente, Lana, su hermana melliza, una estudiante muy popular en la Facultad de Enfermería de la Universidad de Alberta, falleció a los veinticinco años en un accidente de escalada en Kananaskisi, cerca de Calgary, justo un poco antes de la fecha en que iba a viajar a Yellowknife donde tenía un empleo de verano.

Chris descubrió el canto mientras estaba en la escuela secundaria y no ha parado desde entonces. Durante diez años cantó con diferentes grupos hasta que conoció a Janice, con la que ahora tiene dos niñas adorables, Samantha y Sarah, de 8 y 11 años respectivamente. Trabaja en el sector de la construcción, y no hay mucho que no conozca en ese campo. Todavía está muy metido en la cuestión de la música; ha grabado varios CDs, este año ha cantado en el festival musical de Merritt, y antes del final del verano actuará en nuestra área.

John, es un ejecutivo con gran dedicación, implicado en negocios de construcción de terrenos de aparcamiento con la compañía Interpak de Vancuver, donde se descubrieron sus habilidades administrativas. Ha trabajado en una media docena de provincias en Canadá y varios estados americanos con Interpak y GE, y este verano, en Boston, ha dado por finalizado su trabajo. Ha disfrutado de muchas cenas exóticas, innumerables botellas de vino de gran calidad y otros muchos gajes en situaciones dónde el precio no tenía importancia para los representantes de la compañia. Pero la atracción del suelo canadiense y el atractivo de una muchacha llamada Leona resultaron demasiado fuertes. Ahora reside en Calgary, Alberta, donde tendrá que dedicarse a buscar empleo una vez termine sus vacaciones en la bella región del lago Shuswap, B.C.

The Rybinskis

(as recounted by Ed (junior's) Aunt Jenny from British Columbia, Canada.)

Grandmother Veronicka and Grandfather Andrew Rybinski sailed to Canada sometime in the 20's from Poland.

They met and married in Edmonton, Alberta, and acquired a homestead of 160 acres 50 miles west of Edmonton. I, Jenny, was born there in August of 1933 on that lonely forested homestead. My mother actually lost me while picking berries and wouldn't have found me had I not started to wail loudly - probably because I'd been bitten by a mosquito!!

Two years later, the twins, Edward Stanley (your dad) and Gene Walter came along. Two little ones for me to play with and to order around. Gene was the one with the adorable dimples and all the girls chased him while Edward and I stood around in envy!!

Ed and Gene started their own band, not exactly the "rock band" you'd see today. It was called the "Moonlight Orchestra" Uncle Gene played the accordion, and your dad played the drums. Later, in University, your dad also played the clarinet.



I graduated from Seba High, we were the first graduating grade 12's (of which there were 12). I was the valedictorian and petrified! I joined the RCAF in spite of extreme protest form my mother. She wanted me to be a nurse, the last thing on my mind. I won that one. While stationed in Edmonton. I met and married Mike in 1955. The following year we had twins, Lana and Les.

Your dad went on to University in Edmonton, Alberta, becoming an Engineer. In 1966 he met you mum Stephanie, a nurse from England, who had been touring around the world, while taking ballroom dance lessons... so he really swept her off her feet. Your mum and dad headed out East to Quebec when your sister Carol was only about nine months old. But your parents visited again with both girls (Lynda was just a baby). We also came out to visit you a few times, though you probably don't remember the first - you were just a baby! The last time we were out East was at Carol's wedding. Just this summer, my son Les and his family finally came out East to visit, and was very impressed with the friendliness of Quebeckers!


Sometimes families have sad times; Lana a very popular student in U of A nursing four year program, died in a climbing accident at Kananaskisi near Calgary just before she was to leavefor Yellowknife for summer employment. She was just 25. And gentle Gene, generous to a fault, died at 52.

Mike and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary last year.

Les, is now residing in Chilliwack B.C, with wife Nancy and two children Laura and Andy. He is a very talented carpenter and has rebuilt almost everything at his home and just completed a state of the art garage ( more like a cute house). He also is into antique vehicles of which he has acquired four. He is now area manager for Dept of Highways in Chilliwack.

Chris discovered singing while in high school and hasn't stopped since. He sang in various groups and bands for 10 years. Then he met Janice and they have two adorable girls, Samantha and Sarah, 8 and 11. He is in the construction industry and there's not much he doesn't know about that. He is still in the music industry, sung in the Merritt Music festival this year, is singing in our local area this summer and has made several CDs.

John, the hard-nosed business executive, had been involved in the parking industry for Impark in Vancouver, where his management capabilities were discovered. He has worked in half a dozen provinces and several states in the USA for Interpark and GE terminating his employment in Boston this summer. He has enjoyed many exotic dinners and countless expensive wines and other perks where price was no object for business employees. The pull of Canadian soil and a girl called Leona were too great so now he resides in Calgary Alberta where job hunting will again be on the agenda after a holiday in the lake region of the Shuswap this summer.

Historia de la familia Lawrence,

Tu abuela Elsie May Allen se crió en Hertfordshire, Inglaterra, y el abuelo Harold Cyril Lawrence en Kent. Los dos trabajaban en el servicio doméstico, Elsie May con la familia Guinness, como doncella. El trabajar para familias adineradas les daba la oportunidad de viajar extensamente y de pasar vacaciones en Francia y Escocia. De hecho, Elsie May y Harold se conocieron y se enamoraron en el sur de Francia.

Contrajeron matrimonio en 1930 y establecieron su residencia en East Grinstead, Sussex. Sus dos primeros hijos fueron el tío Peter y la tía Elspeth, y luego llegaron los mellizos, Stephanie y Brian, en 1937. Tu abuelo trabajaba en el sector de transporte, conduciendo un autobús de East Grinstead a Londres, cosa que continuó haciendo durante toda la segunda guerra mundial (1939 – 1945).

Mi primera escuela fue East Grinstead Grammar School, y más tarde, de los 16 a los 18 años, viajaba por autobús a Tumbridge Wells para mis estudios de pre-enfermería. Por las mañanas teníamos asignaturas regulares pero por las tardes íbamos a un hospital con programas de entrenamiento para tomar ciertos cursos tales como anatomía, fisiología, etc. Este tipo de estudios me gustaba mucho más porque era lo que realmente quería hacer y, por lo tanto, tenía más sentido para mi.

A los 19 años fui a Windsor para mis estudios de enfermera y, después de graduarnos, mi amiga Jill y yo emigramos a Canada … era el año 1962. Nos instalamos en Toronto y las dos trabajamos en el Hospital General.

¡Mientras tanto, mi hermano mayor Peter se enlistó en la RAF y mi mellizo, Brian, emigró a Australia!

Después de aproximadamente un año, Jill y yo decidimos que realmente no nos gustaba mucho el clima de Toronto y decidimos marcharnos a Bermuda. Allí trabajé durante dos años y conocí a otra buena amiga, Marion. Jill y Marion decidieron finalmente regresar a Inglaterra, pero yo no estaba lista para eso todavía; me dediqué a viajar un poco por los Estados Unidos y visité San Francisco antes de instalarme en Vancuver.

Allí fue donde conocí a tu padre durante unas clases de baile de sociedad. Nos casamos en 1967, el día de mi cumpleaños, el 11 de febrero. Tus tíos Jenny y Mike celebraron la recepción de nuestra boda en su casa. Cuando tu hermana Carol tenía unos nueve meses, decidimos trasladarnos a la provincia de Quebec.

Durante este tiempo, mi hermana Elspeth tuvo dos hijos, Jane, que vivió en Holanda unos cuantos años, y Neil, un médico, que ha visitado Canada y ha viajado a Australia y a muchos lugares exóticos con su esposa y cuatro hijos.

¡Mi hermano Peter tuvo seis hijos! Jacqueline, Shirley, Helen y Gerald, con todos sus hijos, viven en diferentes partes de Inglaterra; Michael es el guardabosque de una gran propiedad y, finalmente, el más joven, Paul, viaja por todo el mundo como representante de ventas, y actualmente vive en Singapur.

Finalmente, mi mellizo, Brian, tuvo dos hijos, Andrew y David que viven en Melbourne, Australia.

The Lawrences

(as told by Ed's mum Stephanie.)

Your Grandmother Elsie May Allen grew up in Hertfordshire, England and Grandfather Harold Cyril Lawrence grew up in Kent. They both worked "in service", Elsie May worked for the Guinness family as a lady's servant. As a result of working for very well off families, they both traveled extensively, holidaying France and Scotland. In fact, Elsie May and Harold met and fell in love in the South of France.

They were married in 1930, and moved to East Grinstead, Sussex. They had two older children, my sister and brother, Uncle Peter and Aunt Elspeth, and then the twins, Stephanie and Brian in 1937. Granddad worked in transportation, he drove a bus from East Grinstead to London, which he did all through the Second World War (1939-1945).

I attended East Grinstead Grammar School first, and then from 16 to 18 years old, I took the bus to Tumbridge Wells for pre-nursing studies. The mornings were spent studying regular subjects, and in the afternoons we'd go to a training hospital for pre-nursing courses like anatomy, physiology etc. I enjoyed this more than the Grammar school, it was what I really wanted to do and it made so much more sense. At 19 I went to Windsor to take my nurses training.

After graduating, my friend Jill and I emigrated to Canada, it was 1962. We worked in Toronto General Hospital.

In the meantime, my elder brother Peter had joined the RAF, and my twin brother Brian emigrated to Australia!

After about a year, Jill and I decided we didn't care much for the Toronto climate, so we moved to Bermuda. There I met another good friend, Marion. I worked in Bermuda for two years. Jill and Marion eventually returned to England, but I wasn't ready to go back yet, so I toured the U.S. a bit, saw San Francisco. Then I moved to Vancouver, BC.

I met your dad during ballroom dancing classes. We got married on my birthday, February 11, 1967. Your Aunt Jenny and Uncle Mike held a reception for us at their place. We moved to Quebec when Carol was about nine months old.

Meanwhile my sister Elspeth had two children, Jane, who lived in Holland for a few years, and Neil, a doctor who has visited Canada and has traveled to Australia and many exotic places with his wife and four children.

My Brother Peter had six kids! Jacqueline, Shirley and Helen and Gerald and all their kids live around England. Michael is the games keeper on an enormous estate, and finally the youngest, Paul, who travels all around the world as a sales representative. He's living in Singapore right now.

Last but not least, my twin brother Brian, had two boys, Andrew and David, they just happen to live in Melbourne, Australia.
